The Science of
Predicting Burnout

Echo is built on decades of organizational psychology research. We don't guess—we measure, analyze, and predict using evidence-based methods trusted by Fortune 500 companies.

THE BUSINESS CASE

Burnout is Costing You Millions

METHODOLOGY 01

Experience Sampling Method (ESM)

Annual engagement surveys are outdated. By the time results come in, problems have already escalated. Echo uses Experience Sampling Method—a research technique that captures data in real-time, as experiences happen.

Traditional Surveys
  • ❌ Once per year
  • ❌ Recall bias distorts answers
  • ❌ Survey fatigue (30+ questions)
  • ❌ Results arrive too late
Echo Daily Check-ins
  • ✓ Daily micro-moments (30 seconds)
  • ✓ Captures real-time emotional state
  • ✓ Low friction = high participation
  • ✓ Trend detection within days

Maslach Burnout Inventory Framework

Our risk scoring is based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI)—the gold standard in burnout research, used in over 35 years of peer-reviewed studies. We measure three key dimensions:

Exhaustion
Feeling drained, depleted of emotional & physical resources
Cynicism
Detachment, negative attitudes toward work & colleagues
Inefficacy
Reduced productivity, feelings of incompetence

Echo's daily check-ins are designed to detect early warning signs across all three dimensions—before they compound into full burnout.

METHODOLOGY 03

Predictive Pattern Recognition

Research shows burnout doesn't happen suddenly—it follows predictable patterns over 2-4 weeks. Echo's algorithm identifies these patterns:

1
Declining Energy Trends
Consistent drop in reported energy over 5+ days signals exhaustion phase
2
Satisfaction-Energy Divergence
When satisfaction drops faster than energy, it indicates growing cynicism
3
Participation Drop-off
Reduced engagement with check-ins often precedes resignation by 2-3 weeks

Psychological Safety & Team Performance

Google's Project Aristotle studied 180 teams and found that psychological safety—not individual talent—was the #1 predictor of team performance. Teams where members feel safe to take risks outperform others by 40%.

Echo creates psychological safety through anonymity. Individual responses are never shown to managers—only aggregate team trends. This encourages honest reporting and surfaces issues that would otherwise stay hidden.

Privacy by Design
Managers see team averages only. Individual data stays private. No surveillance, no micromanagement.
